Caster v0.5.20 Stable
released this
2026-09-11 13:34:06 -07:00 | 29 commits to master since this releaseChromecast startup and buffering fixes
- Build a real startup cushion before loading relayed live IPTV, and explicitly start Chromecast within that buffered window. Balanced quality uses 16 seconds of media; low-latency uses 12 and quality uses 20.
- Recover a live receiver whose playback clock freezes in PLAYING or BUFFERING for 20 seconds. Recovery reuses the existing relay, respects pauses and Stop, and has a retry cooldown.
- Allow throttled-source recovery during relay startup and cap hardware encoder probing at eight seconds in total.
- Correct fractional-frame-rate HLS priming and preserve enough media for the advertised target duration.
- Leave healthy streams on stream copy and preserve normal starting behaviour for external playlists and finite media.
The buffering change follows the Google Cast live-streaming guidance and was checked on a real Chromecast, not just the relay output.
Validation
- 387 automated tests passed, including the real Windows updater and failed-restart rollback tests; 14 optional live tests skipped in the automated run.
- Python compilation and git whitespace checks passed.
- A controlled real-time H.264/AAC stream repeatedly buffered with a shallow startup window. With the corrected 16-second window and explicit starting position, every receiver sample over the next minute was PLAYING.
- Two supplied IPTV links started in approximately 10 and 30 seconds during live checks. Provider delivery varied and buffering still occurred. Automatic freeze recovery was observed restoring playback, followed by 47 seconds of continuously PLAYING samples.
This improves startup and recovery; it cannot guarantee uninterrupted playback when the provider delivers media too slowly.
